NMSC

A PLACE FOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

We at Normah Medical Specialist Centre, not only aim to be a preferred healthcare provider in the region but we also aspire to be a centre for experiential learning among people in the medical fraternity.

NMSC is now gaining reputation for providing on-the-job training opportunities under the tutelage of our very own resident consultants, nurse educators and administrators. Many of our medical, administrative and paramedical staff has been appointed as adjunct lecturers to UNIMAS also as invited speakers and preceptors to continuous medical education seminars and forums.

Recently NMSC played host to fifty (50) visiting 3rd year Diploma in Nursing Students / Supervisors from Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Dokter Soedarso, Pontianak West Kalimantan, Indonesia. These fifty students / supervisors were at NMSC on a Clinical Orientation and attachment to five clinical areas namely the Accident & Emergency(A & E), ICU / HDU, Paediatric Unit, Surgical Care Unit and Internal Medicine.

Throughout their six (6) days attachment, they were grouped into five (5) groups, each group being assigned to our Assistant Director of Nursing and Nursing Preceptors.

We at NMSC spare no expense in ensuring that our nurses are not only trained but also continue to update their knowledge also continuously upgrade their skills through Continuous Nursing Education (CNE) and sharing of experience with other nurses from other parts of the world. Two 3rd year nursing students from the Monash University in Australia, Sally and Tanya were also at NMSC recently on clinical attachment prior to their graduation.

When I interviewed both Sally and Tanya as to why they chose NMSC and what they learnt during their attachment, they were quick to mention that when they were given the opportunity to partake in our International Nursing Attachment, they both were eager to apply for Malaysia and NMSC.

During their brief two weeks attachment, they have identified many cultural differences in nursing at NMSC, however, the fundamental elements of nursing practice are very similar to their country, Australia. A difference that was prominent to them was the involvement of the family contributing to patient care. A beautiful quality which is not practiced with such intent throughout Australian Hospitals.

They too, went on to say that NMSC has a strong and happy staff morale, striving for excellence and delivering quality and holistic care for all the patients who stay at NMSC.
The others who are currently on attachment at NMSC include a dietetic student from University Sains Malaysia who is attached to our cafeteria under the supervision of our Kitchen Manager and another medical laboratory technology student from the University Technology Mara who is attached to the Pathology & Laboratory Department.
