Whenever someone suffers a traumatic medical experience, such as stroke, cardiac arrest, or work accident, the primary response is to stabilize the patient. Once the patient is stable, we can begin the process of treatment that leads to the discharge of the patient back to his or her home and family to continue the return to wellness. For the patient, the story is just beginning. The road to recovery can cover many months and even years to regain partial or complete function of all motor skills and mental faculties. It can be difficult and emotionally draining for the patient and family. The support provided by the family is essential. The support and rehabilitation provided by the Doctors and Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist is irreplaceable in the return to normalcy.

The article by our Consultant Neurosurgeon on strokes presents information about the causes and complications of strokes. We present an accompanying article that addresses some aspects of the rehabilitation process and therapy activities designed for stroke patients. Our Chief Physiotherapist at Normah Medical Specialists Centre authors this article.

We also continue the series on Renal Disease by our Consultant Nephrologist with part two of the three part series. This article highlights the medical treatment options for patients suffering from kidney failure. The presentation of this medical problem is becoming more prevalent each month. As we continue our efforts of education, early detection and prevention, we are working hard to try to find ways to limit the number and severity of cases in our population.
