Orthopaedic Surgery “Orthopaedic” comes from the Latin words “Ortho” (straight) and “Paedic” (children). In the early days of surgery, it dealt mainly with deformities in children. Now it deals with conditions of the musculoskeletal system in all age groups. Recent advances have widened the scope of Orthopaedics. With better understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and better instrumentation, conditions can be treated with less trauma to normal tissue. The aim is to return function of the bone and joints to normal as fast as possible. Better internal fixation methods, implants and prosthesis allow bone and joint mechanics to be restored as closed to normal as possible. Arthroscopy and image guided surgery reduce the surgical trauma to normal tissue. Some of the conditions commonly treated by orthopaedic surgeons are trauma (fractures, dislocation, ligamentous injuries), degenerative disorders (osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease), deformities and tumours. All of these services are available in Normah. |
