The Imaging unit is a very important support service for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It has a range of sophisticated imaging machines.

Fluoroscopy
This is a special X-Ray machine that allows real time viewing of the internal organs.

General Radiography
These are machines used to obtain images of internal organs such as the heart, bone, and lung. It may be static, or mobile, allowing x-rays to be done by the bedside in the wards.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI is a new imaging technique using strong magnetic fields, radiowaves and a computer to produce pictures of body structure. It is able to create images of practically any part of the body, and is particularly useful in the head and spine. It is able to “see” lesions which may not show up on other modalities of imaging. It does not use x-rays, and is thus safe from radiation exposure risk.

Computerised Tomography (CT)
CT Scan uses a computer to generate images from a series of x-rays taken. It produces cross-section pictures in several planes.

Ultrasonography
This is a very useful scanning technique using high frequency sound waves. As these waves (too high in frequency to be heard by humans) pass through tissue layers, some are bounced back, and picked up by a receiver. A computer then uses these information to create an image of that section, in real time. There is no radiation exposure risk, and the ultrasonic wave has been proven to be safe. This equipment is used to scan many areas of body.

Mammography
This is a special x-ray machine for taking fine resolution x-rays of the breast. It allows imaging of breast tissue, and can detect lesions deep in the breast tissue which is otherwise non palpable. It is effective in detecting benign and cancerous lesions. It is useful in detecting early breast cancer, allows localisation for biopsy and is used as a screening tool.

Multi-Slices Computed Tomography (MSCT) Scan
MSCT scanner is the latest new generation state-of-the-art x-ray scanner with multiple detector channels designed to obtain image data from different angles around the body, and then uses advanced computer processing the information to show detail cross-section, 2D and 3D picture of body tissues, organs and blood vessels.
